Prohibited Substance – Zoledronic Acid

NOTICE TO TRAINERS

Racing Australia is aware that the APMVA has issued a PERMIT TO ALLOW SUPPLY AND MINOR USE OF AN UNREGISTERED VETERINARY CHEMICAL PRODUCT for Zoledronic Acid.

The substances set out in Schedule 1, Part 1, Division 1 of the Rules of Racing (i.e. Prohibited List A) are specified as prohibited substances at all times.

Racing Australia is of the view that these substances have no place in the treatment of racehorses and that their use is a risk to the integrity of racing and/or the welfare of horses.

Trainers are reminded that pursuant to Item 23 of Prohibited List A, Zoledronic Acid is listed as a prohibited substance. Accordingly, it is prohibited at all times.

Trainers are reminded of their obligations under the Rules of Racing with respect to substances that are listed in Prohibited List A, bearing in mind that any finding of guilt could result in a substantial penalty.

This includes Trainers’ obligations under AR 250, which provides that a person must not have in their possession any prohibited substance on Prohibited List A or any substance or preparation containing a prohibited substance on Prohibited List A. Accordingly, Trainers are reminded that they must not have in their possession (which clearly includes being located/stored at their stables) any Zoledronic Acid or any preparation containing Zoledronic Acid.
