Update on North West Harness/Greyhound Track

Wednesday 17 March 2021

The Tasmanian Government is committed to racing in all three regions of Tasmania.

I am pleased to advise that Tasracing has appointed Dalton Consulting Engineers, which specialises in sporting infrastructure, to provide project design, documentation and contract administration for the construction of a harness and greyhound track and associated facilities on the North West Coast.

Daltons has been associated with a number of interstate racecourse developments including Moonee Valley, Cranbourne and Sandown Park.
Under the contract, Daltons will provide design and engineering services to design, detail and provide specifications for all aspects of the racing and training facilities, taking into account contemporary, welfare-focussed design principles.

In last year’s Budget our Government committed $8 million for the development of these new harness and greyhound racing facilities and Tasracing has already begun preliminary work on potential locations for new facilities, which will be developed to the highest standards to ensure safe racing for horses and dogs.

We want to ensure harness and greyhound industry participants, particularly those from North West Tasmania, have their input into this relocation process and consultation about the relocation is well underway with local industry participants, race clubs, racing stakeholders and the Devonport City Council and will continue through the development of these new tracks.

This is a win-win situation for Devonport and the North West Coast and I thank all parties for their ability to come to this agreement and look forward to the delivery of a brand new racing facilities in the region.
