Tatlow Medallist and Tasmanian Hall of Fame member Noel Salter is pinning his faith in the fast American import Stonebridge Regal at the 2019 Tasmanian Harness Yearling Sale at Carrick on Saturday, February 16.

Salter, who has been one of Tasmania’s leading breeders over three decades, is offering a colt, a gelding and a filly by the Tasmanian-based Artsplace horse, who has achieved a good measure of success on the Apple Isle.

The Bandbox winner Ordinaire Jane, the Granny Smith victor Ark Breeze, Karalta Dazzler, Jane Grant, Finn Mac Kee and Regal Idea are among the list of winners sired by Stonebridge Regal in Tasmania.

The trio from Noel and Marlene Salter’s consignment at the sales all belong to Tasmania’s foremost maternal families.

A September foal, the filly is out of the unraced Western Cheater, a Western Terror granddaughter of broodmare gem Rosie Heir. This is the family of the Dandy Patch winners Chippolini and Ogrady, Vinokourov (Raider Stakes), Risen Star (Vic. Gold Chalice) and $100,000 winners Punt Road Disco and Vande Velde.

“Western Cheater possessed high speed but was headstrong,” Noel said. “Her first foal Roll West won as a three-year-old but had leg problems. The Stonebridge Regal filly is her second foal and she now has a filly by Betting Line.”

“I think Western Cheater could be my next good broodmare.”

The Stonebridge Regal gelding is the third foal from the former crack racemare Cloudy Delight (by Bettor’s Delight), who won three classics at two and was the Tasmanian 2YO Filly of the Year.

“Her second foal is a Pet Rock two-year-old colt which I really like,” Noel stated.

Cloudy Delight is a granddaughter of Fox Cloud, the dam of the classics and cups winner Foxfighter ($155,644) and Karalta Macloud, and descends from the same family as Fox Port, Foxworth, Tony Macarony and Poatina.

The third of the Salter draft is a three-quarter brother to the Tasmanian Sale Classic winner Modern Judge. From the famed Gentle family, the colt is out a half-sister to the dual Northam Cup winner De Galdearno ($189,628) and the Burnie Cup winner Truly Blissfull, both $100,000 earners.

“They’re all nice yearlings. I particularly like the filly who is very well developed,” Noel said.
