Apprentices back to school

TASMANIA’S apprentices spent a day at school in Hobart on Monday attending a training day workshop that comprised most facets of the industry.

The group comprised the state’s five apprentices, Chris Graham, Alex Patis, Breaana Smith, Teagan Voorham and Chantal Willis along with visiting Hong Kong apprentice Peter Lui who is in Tasmania to ride in trials for three months.

Apprentices heard from a number of keynote speakers including tasracing.com.au’s form analyst Tristan Heffernan who gave the young riders an insight into how to assess horse form which was well received by the riders.

Prominent racehorse owner Lance Cure, who is a senior executive with Finance Brokers of Tasmania, spent an hour delivering tips and explaining how best apprentices can invest their earnings.

Racing Victoria’s jockey coach and former top rider Matt Pumpa delivered two sessions of which the first pertained to what makes a top apprentice and what is required to become a metropolitan apprentice with an emphasis on what workload is expected from the riders.

In the afternoon session, he worked with Tasmania’s Apprentice Jockey Program Manager, Stephen Maskiell, to deliver a mechanical horse skill session as well as offering advice on training drills and ways to improve a rider’s skill level.

Chief thoroughbred steward Scott Quill spent his session discussing most facets of integrity and the apprentices were particularly interested in the race replay review segment that focused on analyzing why jockeys had been suspended or reprimanded for causing interference.

The final session was delivered by Tasracing journalist Peter Staples who explained how to deal with all forms of media with an emphasis on how best to manage social media.
