Our first priority is to keep Tasmanians safe and secure and that’s why we made the tough decision to temporarily cease racing in the State.

We are equally committed to assisting those doing it tough during this difficult period, and today confirm a significant support package for the state’s racing industry of around $2 million per month.

The package broadly ensures stakes money will continue to be paid to the racing industry through the postponement.

I acknowledge the postponement of racing will impact all three racing codes, and this support package will assist industry participants to derive income while choosing whether to keep their animals in work.

Animal welfare is at the heart and centre of this package, with payments for trainers based on the number of animals they have registered to ensure their welfare is maintained.

Training tracks will remain available and those who assist in animal welfare, including trainers, veterinarians, farriers and those who feed the animals, will be able to continue their essential work.

Based on expert industry advice, cash assistance for each animal in work will be made available depending on the code.

Businesses and individuals who participate in the industry will also be eligible for a range of financial assistance measures previously announced by the Federal and State Governments.

Tasmania’s racing industry supports more than 5,000 people around the State and generates more than $103 million each year in economic benefits so it is vital that we keep participants actively involved through this postponement.

While these are challenging times for all Tasmanians, I am confident this support will help to keep the racing industry alive and ready to continue when it is in a position to fully resume operation.
