Rosebery Athletic Club has won $10,000 after drawing the winning horse in the inaugural Ladbrokes Carpet Charge race at the Devonport Cup meet on 11 January.
Twenty-five thousand dollars was split between 12 north west coast-based sporting clubs and associations that were allocated a horse to run in the race.
Rosebery Athletic Club Secretary Duncan Murfet said the prize money was life-changing for the sporting club.
“Ten thousand dollars will make such a big difference to our club and other community clubs within our community,” he said.
“We rely on sponsorship to keep the club and annual carnival alive but with dwindling attendees the future of our carnival was in limbo.
“The prize money from Tasracing will allow us to further invest in the community event and re-attract local people.”
Now in its 67th year, the Rosebery carnival is hoping to bring back the iconic rock drilling competition after a three-year hiatus.
“Rock drilling has been unique to the Rosebery carnival for more than 30 years and having to cancel the event three years in a row has been disappointing for the whole community,” he said.
“It is our hope this significant prize can help to resurrect this historic competition.”
Tasracing will continue to run the race with the goal of supporting even more north-west coast community clubs and associations.
