Jaja boogies for Turners Beach Cricket Club

Friday 12 January 2024

The first leg of the 2024 Ladbrokes Community Sports Series resulted in the Turners Beach Cricket Club taking home $10,000, courtesy of the brilliant Carpet Charge victory of Jaja Chaboogie in Devonport on Wednesday.

A thrilling second edition of the 1009m, $109,000 race wasn’t without some drama, as 2023 race winner Turk Warrior was scratched on Tuesday, and $8 chance Needs Sugar was scratched at the gates, leaving a field of nine.

While disappointing for the sporting clubs who drew one of the scratched runners, they still enjoyed a great day at the races and didn’t leave empty-handed.

“All clubs that drew a runner in the Ladbrokes Carpet Charge receive a minimum of $500,” said Ladbrokes Business Development & Partnerships Manager Guy Hexter.

“It’s a really fantastic opportunity to get more local communities involved with their local racing club, as we’ve seen with the Ladbrokes Carpet Charge on Devonport Cup Day.”

Given Jaja Chaboogie started the Carpet Charge as a $20 outsider, the Turners Beach Cricket Club weren’t expecting to take home the grand prize but were expectedly thrilled with the outcome.

“We need some upgrades to the clubrooms, so the money will go towards that, and we’re really grateful to Tasracing and Ladbrokes for the opportunity,’ said Jake Hudson from the Turners Beach Cricket Club.

“We weren’t a part of it last year, but it’s great to be part of it this year; it’s a fantastic initiative.”

The Ladbrokes Community Sports Series continues on both Hobart and Launceston Cup Days, where another 28 clubs (14 on each day) will have the opportunity to win cash prizes.
