Tasmania is one of only a select number of Australian racing jurisdictions with a comprehensive Code of Practice for Racehorses, reflecting the state’s commitment to animal welfare within the racing industry.
The Code of Practice outlines enforceable standards and best-practice guidelines for the care, welfare, and health of all registered racehorses in Tasmania. It applies to everyone responsible for racehorse care, ensuring welfare coverage from breeding through to retirement and rehoming.
Racehorse ownership is a long-term responsibility, and provisions must be made for a horse’s retirement. Many horses will transition into second careers in disciplines such as dressage or show jumping, while others may serve as therapy animals or companions.
This Code covers both thoroughbred and standardbred horses and forms part of the Tasmanian Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the racing industry.
