The festive season in Tasmania is one of the most exciting times for racing around the state and this year is no exception.
As we all take a breath on Christmas Day and enjoy spending time with our families and friends, the action re-starts Boxing Day with a brilliant harness meeting programmed at Devonport while the Hobart Greyhound Racing Club will host a 10-race card at Elwick in the south of the state.
On Boxing Day King Island will hosts one of its biggest meetings of the season and this year popular radio and television personality Shaun Cosgrove has been invited as guest race caller.
On Sunday December 29, the Devonport Racing Club hosts a strong thoroughbred meeting that will act as a warm-up to it’s showcase Ladbrokes Devonport Cup meeting on January 8.
The Carrick Park Pacing Club also races on December 29 with a twilight meeting scheduled and the club will ensure plenty of activities for the while family.
On Monday, December 30, the Launceston Greyhound Racing Club hosts a meeting at Mowbray, and the next day (Dec 31), the North-West Greyhound Racing Club opens its gates at the Devonport Showground for a cracking 10-race card.
On New Year’s Day the Tasmanian Turf Club hosts its iconic Longford Cup meeting at Longford for what is the tracks only meeting of the year with all races covered on Sky 1.
Longford Cup day is a must-attend for anyone travelling in or to the north of the state.
King Island also races on New Year’s Day with a combined thoroughbred/harness meeting and this too is the club’s major race day of the season.
The HGRC races on January 2 for what is a night meeting at Elwick to round out what is a huge week of racing in Tasmania.
For those wanting to look a bit further into the month, the TTC hosts a great thoroughbred meeting ton Saturday, January 4, that boasts four brilliant feature races – the $100,000 3YO Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) and $100,000 weight-for-age Tasmania Stakes (1600m), as well as the 2YO Alfa Bowl and the Winzenburg Quality Handicap for sprinters.
