Tasracing has welcomed the commencement of the Development Application (DA) advertising process today (23 August) by the Latrobe Council for its proposed greyhound and harness tracks on the north-west coast.
Tasracing CEO Andrew Jenkins said the company was planning to build the new racetracks on 27 hectares of private land opposite the Devonport Airport.
“We have undertaken significant studies (including traffic and environmental) since Tasracing acquired the land last year and have been working with the council in the lead up to the DA advertisement phase,” he said.
“Tasracing has also been actively engaging with north-west coast-based greyhound and harness racing industry participants about the proposed development, providing updates and seeking feedback as appropriate.”
Mr Jenkins said Tasracing had also consulted extensively with track design experts for both codes regarding the proposed facility.
“Taking account of track performance for animal welfare considerations has been critical,” he said.
“We have also sought advice through an animal welfare lens for best practice kennelling and stabling.”
This DA maps out the long-term vision for the site and, if approved, will be developed in stages with the activation of racing for both codes the priority.
