The Barry Campbell-trained Duperrey will look to make it consecutive wins when he contests the Simon’s Design Centre Class 1 over 1150m at Devonport on Sunday.
Initially purchased by Star Thoroughbreds at the 2014 Gold Coast Magic Millions sale, he was later syndicated and trained by Australia’s leading trainer Chris Waller and placed in a trial in July 2015 behind Group winner Ragesse.
Duperrey was very difficult to manage as 2YO and didn’t become more tractable in his 3YO season. After several failed attempts to get him to races his owners Kathryn Wood and Bruno and Jac Calabro decided to send him to Tasmanian trainer Barry Campbell. It would appear that the move paid off as if Duperrey’s manners can be kept under control then the patience shown by his owners could be rewarded well into the future.
The 5YO Gelding was super impressive on debut, winning a Maiden over 1000m on the All-Weather surface on 16 July. Tasracing’s form analyst Tristan Heffernan provided the following post-race analysis of the gelding’s win.
“Woohoo found the lead early but Duperrey was able to drive through underneath to take up the running. The pace was genuine throughout with the winner running good time for this grade.
Duperrey was backed as if unbeatable ($2.25 to $1.32) and that is how it panned out as he dominated the race once he found the front. He was well rated by Ganderton to capitalise on his high cruising speed and the fact that he ran the fastest last 800m of the day shows he can sustain that speed. The 2nd fastest last 200m of the day shows there were no signs of wilting late and it looks like the wait might be worth it with this rising 5yo. Devonport 1000m form can be a bit tricky to follow but this does look a horse with a future.”
