Tasracing, in conjunction with Ladbrokes, will introduce a new race on Devonport Cup Day in 2023 (Wednesday 11 January).
The Ladbrokes Carpet Charge – which will become the richest sprint race on a synthetic surface in Australia – is a 1009 metre Open Handicap for 12 runners with prizemoney totalling $109,000.
Programmed between the Listed Newmarket Handicap and Ladbrokes Stakes, the Ladbrokes Carpet Charge provides an additional feature race for the summer carnival.
In addition, all sporting clubs from the north west coast will be invited to enter a draw to be one of 12 clubs selected to have a horse running in the race for their club.
Total prize pool will be $25,000, with the winning club receiving $10,000.
Acting Tasracing CEO Andrew Jenkins said the new race and the support for local sporting clubs was part of Tasracing’s commitment to look at new initiatives and ways to attract race goers and generate broader interest in racing amongst the community.
“The 12 successful sporting clubs will be drawn randomly at a live event on Sheffield Cup Day at Spreyton Racecourse on Friday 23 December 2022,” he said.
“Each of the 12 sporting clubs will be allocated a horse via a random draw once the final field is known at a live event on Friday 6 January 2023 at Spreyton.”
