Update on changes to the GAP waitlist

Friday 21 June 2024

After conducting a six month trial allowing dogs to be entered onto the GAP waitlist whilst still racing, it has been found that this was not assisting in getting dogs through the process in the most timely manner. In fact, during the trial period, the GAP waitlist had more than tripled. This disadvantages any dog that is fully retired from racing and is ready for rehoming. The aim for GAP is not to disadvantage a greyhound that is fully retired, however such a disadvantage was unavoidable under this trial model. Hence this trial is being abandoned with immediate effect and all new dogs entering the program will return to being required to be in wind down before they are eligible to be entered on the wait list.

Any dog currently on the GAP waitlist will have until 5pm on the 30th of June to be placed in wind down to remain on the waiting list. Any dog not in wind down after this time shall be removed from the list and will require a new application to enter once it is placed in wind down.

Express Entry

Commencing 1st January 2024 Gap implemented an express entry option to encourage and reward connections who fully prepare their dogs for rehoming by offering an express entry to dogs meeting criteria meaning they are immediately ready and available for adoption.

To be eligible the dog must meet current GAP entry requirements:

    • Completed 28 day wind down
    • Desexed
    • Current C5 vaccination
    • Listed on the GAP waitlist
    • Have been fostered and completed the current GAP foster care report, which requires dogs to:
          • Be house-trained
          • Be able to get in and out of the car unassisted.
          • Be able to walk up and down 5 stairs
          • Be able to walk quietly on lead
          • Have been on walks outside of their residence and racetracks
          • Pass a muzzle-free assessment (dogs that don’t pass the assessment will be given a full report along with advice of how to work with the dog to help it pass future assessments) (Small dog and Health assessment)

If you have a dog that is on the Gap waitlist that meets these requirements, contact Gap at gapadmin@tasracing.com.au to book a muzzle-free assessment. This option is designed to get adoption-ready greyhounds through to a home faster. This Express Entry trial has proved highly successful, with the longest stay for an express entry dog in GAP being 14 days.
