Today at the GBE hearing I was pleased to confirm that Tasmanian company, StrathAyr has been chosen by Tasracing as the head contractor to redevelop the Elwick thoroughbred race track in Glenorchy.
StrathAyr currently employs 14 people in Tasmania and will employ an additional three Tasmanian staff for the development, supporting local jobs in line with our Buy Local policy.
Tasracing has allocated $12.5 million for the redevelopment that will provide a single 28-metre-wide track, providing first-class facilities and ensuring the long-term future of racing in Southern Tasmania.
The Hodgman Majority Liberal Government is the strongest supporter of Tasmania’s racing industry, and we are working hard to ensure it can continue to grow and prosper for a vibrant, sustainable future.
StrathAyr grass tracks are highly regarded for their all-weather and high use capabilities and will engage with other Tasmanian contractors on the project.
The major earthworks subcontractor, fencing and retaining wall subcontractors will all be Tasmanian, and most of the materials will be sourced locally.
StrathAyr was awarded the multi-million contract after the highly experienced firm, Dalton Consulting Engineers completed the concept design work for the project.
Work is expected to commence after the 2019 Hobart Cup in March and be completed before the 2020 Hobart Cup.
