Lilydale breeder-owner Shane Hawes enjoyed a red-letter year in 2021 with his stock.
Undoubtedly the headline performer was brilliant youngster Mickey Oh (Racing Hill-Ark Breeze), who won four of his five starts including the Group 2 $50,000 Dandy Patch and the $20,000 Tasmanian Sweepstakes.
Bought for $16,000 at the Tasmanian Harness Yearling Sale in 2020, Mickey Oh returned $48,525 plus $10,000 Tasbred and $5,000 yearling sale bonuses.
The siblings Mays Place and Rockandahardplace were other smart winners in 2021 bred by Hawes.
Mays Place took out the Tasmanian Sweepstakes for two-year-old fillies and was a gallant second in the $50,000 Evicus, while Rockandahardplace numbered a heat of the Raider Stakes among his six successes.
A half-brother to Mays Place and Rockandahardplace will be one half of the Hawes’ consignment at the 2022 Tasmanian Harness Yearling Sale to be held on Saturday, March 5 at Carrick Park.
Listed as Lot 15, the colt also ranks as a half-brother to the Cups winner Karalta Dazzler ($186,923) and the Breeders Crown heat winner Karalta Stardust, being out of the former top Tasmanian racemare Karalta Crown ($128,351).
Hawes is also offering a colt (Lot 11) out of the successful Rocknroll Hanover mare Stormborn, a daughter of the former Australian 2YO Filly of the Year and Oaks winner White Thunder ($344,717).
Both colts are from the first crop of the brilliantly fast, million dollar earner Mel Mara (1:47), a Stakes-winning three-year-old and later one of America’s top Free-for-allers.
“They are both beautiful colts that are well grown and from terrific families,” Shane said.
The yearlings are being prepared for the sale by well known Latrobe horsewoman Shelley Barnes.
