Tasracing wishes to acknowledge the recent passing of Hobart and Launceston Cup winning jockey Peter Mertens, who lost a battle with cancer aged 58.
Mertens won multiple feature races in Tasmania including the 2012 Hobart Cup and 2013 Launceston Cup, both aboard one of Tasmania’s all-time greats, Geegees Blackflash.
Overall, the Group 1 winning jockey rode close to 40 Tasmanian winners, predominantly for local trainers Royston Carr and Julie & Keith Richards.
Jockeys at the Hobart meeting on 25 June wore black armbands as a sign of respect for Peter Mertens passing. Sincere condolences to Mertens wife Gulcin, his six children and extended family.
